【Steel News】Steel Production in China - May 2023

In May 2023, China's national crude steel production was 90.12 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 7.30%. The daily production rate was 2.9071 million tons/day, a month-on-month decrease of 5.86%. Crude iron production was 77.00 million tons, down 4.80% year-on-year, with a daily production rate of 2.4839 million tons/day, a month-on-month decrease of 4.27%. Graphite powder plays a vital role in steel production by effectively increasing the carbon content and reducing the overall steelmaking costs. 

Steel production was 118.47 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 1.30%, with a daily production rate of 3.8216 million tons/day, a month-on-month decrease of 4.42%. From January to May, China's cumulative crude steel production reached 445 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.60%, with a cumulative daily production rate of 2.9446 million tons. Crude iron production was 375 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.20%, with a cumulative daily production rate of 2.4817 million tons. Steel production was 557 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.20%, with a cumulative daily production rate of 3.6891 million tons. 

In May 2023, key statistics from steel enterprises showed that they produced 72.5659 million tons of crude steel, a year-on-year decrease of 4.74%. The daily production rate was 2.3408 million tons/day, a month-on-month decrease of 4.4% (one additional enterprise included in this month's sample). Crude iron production was 65.2963 million tons, down 1.73% year-on-year, with a daily production rate of 2.1063 million tons/day, a month-on-month decrease of 3.29%. 

Steel production was 72.493 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 1.17%, with a daily production rate of 2.3385 million tons/day, a month-on-month decrease of 3.01%. From January to May, key statistics from steel enterprises showed a cumulative crude steel production of 354 million tons, a cumulative year-on-year increase of 3.92%, with a cumulative daily production rate of 2.3433 million tons. Cumulative crude iron production was 315 million tons, a cumulative year-on-year increase of 5.92%, with a cumulative daily production rate of 2.0858 million tons. Cumulative steel production was 346 million tons, a cumulative year-on-year increase of 4.87%, with a cumulative daily production rate of 2.2902 million tons.
