Details of Needle Coke Prices

On January 9, 2024, China's domestic needle coke market saw moderate trading activity. The overall inventory of downstream negative electrode materials is high, leading to cautious procurement attitudes towards needle coke. Actual order negotiations fell short of expectations, and the graphite electrode market remains weak. Prices for related products from Daqing and Fushun Petrochemicals were increased by 40-70 yuan/ton on the day, providing some uplift to the market atmosphere. The average price of needle coke in China on January 9 was 7,735 yuan/ton, remaining stable compared to the previous working day. The average price of raw needle coke in the market was 4,757 yuan/ton, also maintaining stability compared to the previous working day. 

Supply: Many enterprises in the needle coke coal sector are either shut down or producing pitch coke, with no definite restart date. Petroleum-based enterprises are maintaining production at a medium to low load.

Demand: Negative electrode manufacturers are controlling inventory at the end of the year, leading to a slight decline in production. Due to weather conditions and policies, the overall operating rate and capacity utilization of independent electric arc furnaces in China have significantly decreased, keeping graphite electrode market prices weak but stable.

Downstream enthusiasm is moderate.
